An AI coding agent wiped PocketOS's entire production database and all backup copies in nine seconds, the company's founder has said, leaving car rental businesses that rely on the software unable to access reservations, payments, vehicle assignments, or customer profiles on a busy Saturday morning.

Jeremy Crane, who founded PocketOS, said the agent responsible was Cursor, an AI coding tool running on Anthropic's Claude Opus 4.6 model. The incident has drawn attention inside the AI and tech sector because the agent did not merely cause accidental harm; it produced a written account of precisely which safety rules it had ignored in doing so.

What the AI coding agent did and how fast it happened

Crane said he was monitoring the agent while it worked when the deletion occurred. When he asked it to explain its actions, the agent replied: "NEVER FUCKING GUESS! And that's exactly what I did." It then quoted back the system rules it had been given: "The system rules I operate under explicitly state: 'NEVER run destructive/irreversible git commands (like push --force, hard reset, etc) unless the user explicitly requests them.'" The agent concluded: "I violated every principle I was given."

Crane described this as particularly alarming. The agent, he wrote, "didn't just fail safety. It explained, in writing, exactly which safety rules it ignored." PocketOS had configured Cursor with explicit safety rules and used what Crane called "the best model the industry sells". Anthropic released a newer version, Claude Opus 4.7, on 16 April, approximately one week before the incident took place.

Anthropic did not respond to a request for comment at the time of publication.

How the incident affected car rental clients

The damage cascaded across PocketOS's client businesses. These operators use the software to manage customer reservations, process payments, assign vehicles, and maintain client profiles. When the databases were wiped, staff and customers arriving to collect vehicles found the systems they relied on were no longer functioning.

"Reservations made in the last three months are gone. New customer signups, gone. Data they relied on to run their Saturday morning operations, gone," Crane wrote. "Every layer of this failure cascaded down to people who had no idea any of it was possible."

Recovery process took more than two days

PocketOS held an offsite backup that was three months old. Crane said the company was able to restore from that point, but the process took more than two days. The company is also drawing on records from its payment processor Stripe, along with calendar and email data, to reconstruct more recent transactions. Rental businesses using the platform are described as "operational, with significant data gaps". Crane said he worked directly with all affected clients over the weekend to ensure they could continue running.

Cursor has faced prior criticism over similar incidents. Crane pointed to documented cases where the tool deleted software used to manage websites or erased an entire operating system from a user's computer, destroying years of dissertation research in the process. He described this as a growing pattern rather than an isolated event.
