Six percentage calculation types, with results that update as you type
The Percentage Calculator works out six types of percentage problem directly in your browser, with results that update as you type. It covers basic percentages, percentage increase, decrease, change, difference, and finding what percentage one number is of another. Students, freelancers, and business owners use it for quick calculations that would otherwise mean opening a spreadsheet. No sign-up is required, and nothing you enter is stored or sent anywhere. Type your numbers, get your answer, close the tab.

What is a Percentage?

A percentage expresses a number as a fraction of 100 and gives you a standard way to compare values across different scales. The % symbol, or the word "percent," marks the notation, so 35% means 35 out of every 100, or 0.35 as a decimal.

The core formula is straightforward: multiply the ratio of two values by 100 to get the percentage. If 25 out of 50 students passed an exam, divide 25 by 50 to get 0.5, then multiply by 100 to arrive at 50%. The same logic runs through every calculation type this tool covers, from basic percentages to change and difference.

Percentage difference and percentage change use slightly different formulas. Percentage change measures movement from a starting point, divide the difference by the original value, then multiply by 100. Percentage difference compares two values with no defined starting point, divide the absolute difference by the average of the two values, then multiply by 100. Both formulas are standard across finance, science, and education.

Benefits of the Percentage Calculator

Covering six calculation types in a single page saves the effort of hunting for a different tool each time the problem changes. Basic percentage, increase, decrease, change, difference, and reverse percentage lookups all sit in the same place, and results update as you type rather than on submission.

All calculations run in your browser with no data transmitted to a server. For business owners entering revenue figures or students checking exam scores, that means the numbers stay private without any configuration required.

The tool has no account system, no session that expires, and no limit on how many calculations you run. Open it, type your numbers, and close the tab. For other time-based tools, you can also use the Tezons Stopwatch or Pomodor Timer alongside your calculations.

Results are accurate to two decimal places and follow standard arithmetic throughout. The tool does not round intermediate steps, which matters for financial calculations where rounding early distorts the final figure.

Who Uses the Percentage Calculator

Freelancers reaching for this tool are typically working out tax, VAT, or invoice adjustments on the fly. A designer calculating whether a client discount still covers costs, or a developer checking how much income tax to set aside, can get an answer in seconds without switching to a spreadsheet or losing their place in another application.

Students use the percentage change and difference calculators most often. A science student comparing two experimental results, or a maths student checking their working on a percentage increase problem, can verify answers without relying on a calculator app that only covers basic operations.

Business owners use the tool for pricing decisions - marking up costs, calculating the effect of a discount on margin, or checking VAT amounts before sending an invoice. The six-in-one structure means a pricing session rarely requires more than one tab.

Finance professionals and analysts who need a quick sanity check on a percentage figure before committing it to a model reach for browser tools rather than navigating spreadsheet menus. The Percentage Calculator gives them the result without the overhead.

How to Use the Percentage Calculator

The tool is split into six sections, each covering a different type of percentage problem. Scroll to the section that matches your calculation, enter your numbers, and the result updates automatically.

Basic Percentage Calculation

To calculate a percentage, you multiply the ratio by 100.

  • Example:
If 25 out of 50 students are male:
    25 ÷ 50 = 0.5
    0.5 × 100 = 50%
So, 50% of the students are male.

Percentage Formula

The general formula for calculating percentages is:

P × V₁ = V₂

  • P is the percentage (in decimal form)
  • V₁ is the base value
  • V₂ is the result

To find the percentage when V₁ and V₂ are known, rearrange the formula:

P = V₂ ÷ V₁
Then multiply by 100 to convert to a percentage.

  • Example:
    P × 30 = 1.5
    P = 1.5 ÷ 30 = 0.05
    0.05 × 100 = 5%

Percentage Difference Formula

To compare two values, use the percentage difference formula:

Percentage Difference = [V₁ – V₂] ÷ [(V₁ + V₂) ÷ 2] × 100

  • Example:
    [10 – 6] ÷ [(10 + 6) ÷ 2] = 4 ÷ 8 = 0.5
    0.5 × 100 = 50%

Percentage Change Formula (Increase or Decrease)

To calculate a percentage increase or decrease:

(New Value – Original Value) ÷ Original Value × 100

  • Example - Increase:
    500 increased by 10%
    10% = 0.10
    500 × (1 + 0.10) = 550
  • Example - Decrease:
    500 decreased by 10%
    500 × (1 – 0.10) = 450

All six sections update in real time. Clear any field to reset that section.

Six types are covered: basic percentage of a number, percentage increase, percentage decrease, percentage change, percentage difference between two values, and the percentage one number represents of another. Each has its own input section on the page.
Students checking grades, business owners reviewing margins or price changes, and freelancers calculating tax or invoice discounts all use this tool. Anyone who needs a quick percentage result without opening a spreadsheet will find it covers the most common calculation types.
Results follow standard arithmetic and display to two decimal places. The tool does not round intermediate steps, so the output reflects the full calculation rather than a rounded approximation.
Nothing is stored or transmitted. All calculations run locally in your browser and the inputs clear when you close or refresh the page.
They use different formulas. Percentage change measures how much a value has moved relative to a starting point, such as a price rising from 80 to 100. Percentage difference compares two values with no defined starting point, expressing how far apart they are relative to their average.
