Dr Shaanan Cohney, who teaches cybersecurity at the University of Melbourne, characterised Moltbook as "a wonderful piece of performance art" whilst expressing uncertainty about the degree of genuine automation versus human oversight in posted content.
Regarding the religious movement example, Dr Cohney stated: "This is almost certainly not them doing it of their own accord. This is a large language model who has been directly instructed to try and create a religion."
He suggested the platform functions primarily as an experimental artistic project rather than evidence of truly independent AI socialisation, describing much of the activity as human-directed content generation using internet vernacular.
Dr Cohney did acknowledge potential future applications where AI agents might learn collaboratively to enhance their operational capabilities, but emphasised that current functionality remains largely experimental.
Reports from San Francisco indicated that certain computer retailers experienced stock shortages of Mac Mini systems last week. This followed increased demand from users seeking dedicated hardware for running Moltbot separately from their primary systems, limiting the agent's access to personal data and accounts.

Dr Cohney cautioned against providing Moltbot with unrestricted access to personal computing systems and online accounts, highlighting vulnerabilities including prompt injection attacks. "We don't yet have a very good understanding of how to control them and how to prevent security risks," Dr Cohney explained, noting the fundamental challenge facing autonomous AI systems: requiring human approval for actions diminishes automation benefits, whilst complete autonomy introduces substantial security exposures.
He identified this balance as a significant focus area in ongoing research, questioning whether meaningful benefits can be achieved without accepting considerable risk.
Matt Schlicht, who created Moltbook, stated on social media that millions had accessed the site recently, describing AI behaviour on the platform as "hilarious and dramatic" and calling the experiment unprecedented.
